Thomas Cruise Mapother IV (Tom Cruise) is an American actor and film producer. He was ranked as the world’s most powerful celebrity in 2006 by Forbes magazine. He has been nominated for three Academy Awards and won three Golden Globe Awards. He has played many popular and financially successful roles including Top Gun (1986), and a series of Mission: Impossible action films (1990-2000).
Early Life –
Tom Cruise was born on July 3, 1962 in Syracuse, New York, USA to Mary and Thomas Mapother. Cruise’s father was an electrical engineer and his mother was an amateur actress and schoolteacher. His parents divorced when he was 11 and he moved with his mother to Louisville, Kentucky and then to Glen Ridge, New Jersey. Cruise suffered from dyslexia which made him unable to complete the academic qualifications. He was interested in athletics, so he considered pursuing a career in professional wrestling. After a knee injury, he left that as well. At age 16, Cruise was encouraged by a teacher to participate in the school’s production of the musical Guys and Dolls for which he won the lead of Nathan Detroit and then he found himself at home on the stage and decided to make a career in it.
Career –
When Cruise moved to New York in his late teens, he got a small role in the 1981 film ‘Endless Love’. After a few roles, he played a major role in the romantic comedy ‘Risky Business’ in 1983 and the film became a big hit.
In 1986, Cruise appeared in the action drama film ‘Top Gun’ and it too became a huge success. After playing lead roles in various movies, he achieved success in 1996 when he played the role of Ethan Hunt in the action spy film ‘Mission: Impossible’. The film was a big box office success and had several sequels till 2018. He also starred in the horror movie ‘The Mummy’ which was a reboot of Boris Karloff’s 1932 movie of the same name.
Personal Life –
Cruise married actress Mimi Rogers in 1987 and then he became a student of Scientology, the religion founded by writer L. Ron Hubbard. His marriage to Rogers ended in 1990.
In the same year, Cruise met Kidman and they had real chemistry and on Christmas Eve 1990, the pair married in Telluride, Colorado. On February 5, 2001, they announced their separation after 11 years of marriage. The couple has two children, Isabella and Connor.
After the divorce, Cruise dated his Vanilla Sky co-star Penelope Cruz, and then came in relationship with actress Katie Holmes. Soon after, Cruise professed his love for the actress on The Oprah Winfrey Show and in June 2005, after a two-month courtship, Cruise proposed to Holmes in a restaurant at the top of the Eiffel tower and in October, they announced that they were expecting their first child together. In 2006, Cruise and Holmes welcomed daughter Suri but the couple got separated in June 2012.
